On A Personal Note:
When I was young I always carried a journal and would write daily, as I travelled around Canada in my youth I visited every library along the way - it was a good safe place to curl up and spend the day with a book, no one even noticed me. I would write stories, poems, (one is in “Crim 101”) and then as a grew older, became a mother, divorced and eventually entered University in my 30s, my writing changed to academic papers. In October of 2019 I was attending classes at UofS a

Shelter
It’s late October, the trees have lost their leaves and cold crisp wind is blowing across grey skies as I start my trusty old BMW and turns on the heat. I glance at myself in the rear view mirror and sigh not my best look, but it will have to do, I think, as I plug my phone into the aux cord and tune into the local radio station. I’m still getting used to the schedule that came with the job at the women’s shelter in the city, in order to be there for the 7am start time I now

Media & Mortality Salience & Aggression in the Age of Information
C. Robinson University of Saskatchewan Psych 207 with Professor David Lane March 19th 2019 Abstract What role does death in the media play in the overall mental health of society? We live in an age of rapid information, and often, information overload – you can’t escape it, if it’s not on the television, it’s on your hand-held device, and instrument which has become as much a part of ‘living’ as ‘breathing’. Tales from 1011
The Night Death Came For Owen. It was a night like any other in October, 2002, and I was visiting my friend Krissy at 1011 Lansdown Ave in Toronto. I knew the place had a reputation for violence, and Krissy and I had both learned to trust our instincts when it came to feeling danger on the horizon. But this night, it wasn't just a feeling. It was a darkness that crept into the air and settled in our bones like a premonition of doom. Krissy and I were sitting in her apartment

Just Another Tuesday
It’s early August and already the air feels noticeably cooler in the evenings, and downright chilly in the morning, a portent for an early winter, I think, as I sit on my back porch and sip a hot cup of coffee. My mind wanders to the list of things yet to be done before winter sets in, the house must be prepared, motorcycle and dirt bikes stored, winter tires and maintenance. And of course, school supplies and attire. I sigh and get up and walk through the creaky weathered ba

PTSD as a Memory Disorder
C. Robinson University of Saskatchewan For Psych 255 with David Lane Nov 4th 2020 Abstract In this review we will be looking at PTSD as a Memory Disorder, and its impact on the Hippocampus, Amygdala and Pre-Frontal Cortex, and the neurobiological and psychological theories of PTSD. While PTSD is classified in the DSM5 as a “trauma and stress related disorder” I would argue that it is also a Memory Disorder caused by changes in the struct

Labeled a Deviant, Labeled a Victim: Fighting for Equality in Sex Work
By C. Robinson In sociology, we often discuss how certain behaviors get labeled as "deviant" by broader society, and how mechanisms of social control are used to enforce conformity. For centuries, sex work—often called the world's oldest profession—has been a prime target for moral entrepreneurs and social reformers. But behind these legal controls and cultural labels are real people whose safety, autonomy, and livelihoods are directly harmed by the stigma attached to them. T

From Crim 101
It’s odd to be sitting in a criminology class, and to be learning about things like crime and poverty and how it’s all entangled, and it’s also sad, because obviously we have known for a long time what causes crime, and we know that we need to be building strong communities, and we need to be giving everyone an equal footing to start life off with. But that’s not how our world is, despite all of our knowledge. As someone who has experienced more than her share of life, which
